Department: Water Department Reports To: Mayor
POSITION SUMMARY
The Water Department Superintendent is responsible for overseeing the daily operation, maintenance, and repair of the Town’s water system. The position plans and coordinates personnel, equipment, and materials to maintain the system safely, efficiently, and within budget.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Class “D” Water Treatment License and Class “C” Water Distribution License, or the ability to obtain required licenses within an agreed -upon time frame after hire.
- Knowledge of water-system equipment, tools, pumps, wells, hydrants, valves, water lines, and meters.
- Ability to inspect, repair, and maintain water-system equipment.
- Ability to collect and perform routine water-sample testing.
- Ability to maintain accurate department records.
- Ability to communicate and work effectively with employees, Town officials, and the public.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Monitor the daily operation of wells, pumps, motors, controls, and related equipment.
- Inspect, maintain, and repair water lines, valves, hydrants, water meters, water towers, and well houses.
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance to help prevent service interruptions.
- Monitor water and chemical usage and ensure proper operation of equipment.
- Collect and perform routine testing of water samples.
- Flush water lines and hydrants as needed.
- Maintain accurate records of repairs, maintenance, equipment, and water-system activities.
- Operate trucks, tractors, mowers, chainsaws, shop equipment, and hand tools.
- Perform minor repairs and maintenance on Town property, equipment, and vehicles.
- Respond to water-system emergencies and work extended hours when necessary.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Mayor.
SUPERVISION
- Supervise and assign work to general maintenance employees.
- Provide direction to seasonal or temporary employees as needed.
PLANNING
- Identify and communicate equipment and maintenance needs.
- Help establish priorities for short- and long-term water-system projects.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position requires:
- Outdoor work in all types of weather.
- Heavy lifting and physical labor.
- Working in or around machinery, fumes, excavations, and other job-site hazards.
- Climbing and working in awkward or difficult positions.
- Availability for emergency situations and extended hours.
GENERAL REQUIREMENT
The Water Department Superintendent is expected to perform duties safely, professionally, and in accordance with Town policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.

Duties:
- Install, repair, and maintain water mains according to specifications
- Conduct inspections to identify issues and perform necessary repairs
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and standards
- Operate equipment such as backhoes, trenchers, and pipe cutters
- Respond to emergency calls for water main repairs and other duties as assigned
Experience:
- Proven experience working with water mains or similar infrastructure
- Knowledge of water main installation and repair techniques
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid driver's license
- Must obtain class "E" Drinking Water Treatment license within one year of hire date
- Must pass drug screening

Primary Responsibilities

- Prepare detailed incident and investigative reports.
- Investigate criminal activity as assigned.
- Maintain required certifications through ongoing training with the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (SCCJA).

Minimum Qualifications
